(62,536 posts)Putin is unabashidly capitalist. He merely wanted to get rid of the "corrupt" (e.g. anti-Putinist) oligarchs. I think it would be silly to cast Putin as a communist or a socialist given Putin's background, which is why I assumed the OP was referring to Assad.
I'd definitely agree if the OP was referring to Putin it is asinine.
But Assad has some "leftist cred" which is why he's supported by the WSWS despite his crimes against humanity.
Putin does have the Russian mafia behind him, but from a capitalist perspective it is not too different from the Rockefeller running the US after WWII. To characterize him as a thug, I think, is a bit extreme. His background is a young kid bullied in his life who managed to rise to power. For all we know Putin wasn't truly behind the Russian arms sales to Syria which is why he's done a 180 in the past few days on this issue.
