8. Why do people think this was simply over the Quran

It's far more complex than that. The burning of the Quran was just the final straw after having their country occupied for a decade and seeing their people killed by that occupying force. Islam is seen as the glue that is holding a fragil society together so while the burning of the Quran is the spark, the kindling for the fire has been prepared over a decade of occupation. Religion is rarely the single cause of events like this, fanaticalism does not arise in a vacuum. It arises as an (wrong) answer to oppression.
