1. I don't know - how much would it actually hurt them?

Well two questions really.

1) do they really care about their staffs?

2) if they did, are they of sufficient means that they could take care of some of their staff?

As for it getting stripped out in committee, well I hope everything gets stripped out in committee and Obama is presented a clean resolution. There is no compromise with Republicans at this point, there is capitulation. If we choose to give the Republicans some of what they want in order to end the shut down - that's not compromise.
