There are books and websites dedicated to this very subject. Hell, google "How to Marry for Money" and you will be blessed with hours of reading. So, if someone were to simply point out that due to the spring/fall thing, his genuine acerbity, and poor physical appearance the only thing that appears to be attractive per today's societal norms is his large bank account, I think you have to admit that there is at least a good chance to assume his financial stability had something to do with his much younger wife deeming him a suitable mate.
