126. Some people are moved to rage just at the mention of him

One day a few months after the 2012 election one of my co-workers started singing in our mom & pop biz office. This is not unusual (for him) as he regularly serenades us and we for the most part enjoy it.

What was different this day is he was singing Al Green's You Make Me Feel Brand New. He was singing it within earshot of me and the boss' wife. I made the mistake of making the comment, and I quote, "Awww that's the song the president sang to Michelle."

This lit a fuse under Mrs. Boss and she went off like a bomb on a 15 minute rant what an awful socialist Kenyan Muslim he is and how she never wants his name uttered in this office again. (I didn't utter his name BTW). She ended the rant by stating while looking right at me that "SOME PEOPLE " have been fired for just having an Obama sticker on their car. True, I had an Obama sticker on my car from the convention until a week or so after the election.

Then she stormed off into her mostly unused (she's kind of a figurehead "co-owner&quot office and slammed the door.

Me and my singing (liberal) co-worker just stood there with our jaws dropped. This from for the most part a sweet, 70ish, 4 foot 5 inch petit, adorable lady who would give me the shirt off her back, held my hand thru my divorce from my husband of 30 years and counseled me thru my oldest daughters wedding a not long after that.



I spent the rest of the day fighting back tears waiting to be fired from my very good job.

When I showed up for work the next day the real boss came in and basically apologized for her and asked me not to make any "political comments" in the office. He seemed quite embarrassed by it all. He hasn't raised his voice or got any kind of angry in the almost four years I've been working for him. I think he was afraid I was going to quit. I stuck up for myself and made sure he was aware my comment was of a trivial musical nature and he agreed. He said Obama just really rubbed her the wrong way (ya think?).

During the government shut down drama a few weeks ago I was similarly attacked by Mrs. Boss for no good reason again . She was standing 6 feet behind me in a busy, chatty office trying to get my attention, I was using the noisy scanner and didn't hear her say my name.

She stormed around to the front of my desk and ordered me to her "office" like I was a five year old being sent to my room and went on another 10 minute rant about how I don't respect her and how DARE I ignore her. How I've not been as warm to her as I used to be and demanded to know why. Well I kept my thoughts about that to myself because I need the job and she is in the office less than an hour a week.

This time I didn't even get a second hand apology. He was mortified, it was written all over his face.

I'll never feel the same way about her again. Fake it till you make it. I won't regret giving my notice next spring when I move out of the God forsaken red fucking state.
