(102,872 posts)you city dwellers but it's a source of regular fare for a few folks I know out here in Montana/Idaho. And the meat is normally organic when you think about it. Now that it's legal to harvest here, it's been put into practice by even more folks. It's cheaper than hunting and one elk or deer can feed a lot of people or last a while in the freezer. Butchering is nasty work but for those who hunt anyway, it's easier and doesn't require all that stalking and buying a tag and then fetching it out of the wild... as long as it's fresh enough to use.
Otherwise, the animal is usually hauled off to some dumpster station because the F&G folks don't want bears and wolves and other carnivores getting hit on the side of the road while they feast on the free food.
It's a matter of perspective I guess. I'm not a meat eater these days but I don't condemn those who would prefer road kill to cat food. I have eaten plenty of road kill when I did eat meat, better than store bought. You just have to know how to cook and have something to cook on, a campfire will do in a pinch.
