I can see trying to look at the bright side of an issue, but it really boiled down to - there were basically two choices and the one that usually won lost. So they blame an independent.

It is never 'hey, maybe some people don't like our take on issues, let's address that and see how to address those issues'. Blame someone else, claim you won, and keep selling the same product that people are finding a bitter taste to.

Could be folks who didn't like your message but liked the party in general didn't show up, and those who hated it did.

The last election in 2009 was 58%-41% for the current republican gov. 17+% change from 4 years ago. That third party guy didn't make up that many votes.

And from CNN:

And no, Cuccinelli can't blame his loss on scandal-plagued outgoing GOP Gov. Bob McDonnell or third-party libertarian candidate Robert Sarvis.

Despite his scandals, Virginia voters said they approve of McDonnell's job performance by 12 points, 53% to 41%. And if Sarvis had not been in the race, exit polls indicate McAuliffe still would have beaten Cuccinelli by two points, 48% to 46%.

Fact is, people didn't like the tea bagging idiot.
