but I once read that something like half of all beds in maternity wards in Brazil were occupied by women recovering from illegal abortions.

If you talk to doctors who were around before Roe v Wade (a rapidly dwindling minority at this point) you'll hear exactly what it was like when abortions were not legal in this country. Those who oppose a woman's right to determine her own life have the simple, silly, and totally wrong idea that if abortions are illegal women won't have them. Nope. But women will die and be maimed if they're not safe and legal.
