before I fell head over heels for Bugs Bunny. My hero and role model, a very large influence in my single digit years.
My brother had to take on a lot of responsibility in the household. His ideas of nutrition were also shaped by television.
He bought us plenty of spinach (Popeye and all of that), Vitamin D whole milk (to prevent the rickets), fresh tomatoes (not sure why, but a good idea), Hershey's chocolate syrup and Mars candy bars, (since chocolate is one of the five food groups), Eggo Waffles (that I got very good at toasting and buttering for breakfast), but he burned the fried eggs (did his best, he did) and got us started on candy cigarettes (quite good).
Ah, yes, the consumer culture of the unwashed masses of the fifties. Then he joined the Air Force and never came back but always kept in touch.
From there our kid cuisine advanced to Swanson TV dinners when both parents were at work all the time.
Oh, and Delicious apples from Washington state.
