8. That's true -but the age when the N word stopped being acceptable

is about 20-30 years before the phrase he used stopped being acceptable. It's a matter of - not exactly identification, but more like "I could see my uncle doing that, and I like my uncle so even though that's not acceptable, I guess since he apologized it's ok."

I'm not saying this is the way things should be. Just trying to explain the phenomonon
