(28,017 posts)broiled on a campfire, with a potato cooking slowly under the ashes, with hand made bread baked on a stick. As the sun sets, and the fire is going steadily, even Spam is a treat. Then when you dig out the fully baked spuds, season with a little salt, yummy.
As the fire dies down, the stars begin to come into view, and after you eaten, it is time to break out that extra weight that you carried all the way to the camp area. Get the bottle opener, grab to cups, and pour a nice dry red wine. Look up, and in the twilight you can spot bats, a few smaller birds, and even an owl or two. If you let the fire die down even more, and stare up at the liquid black sky, meteors appear, flashes of light that live for a second, and die out as wonder just what it was.
Depending on the time of year, you can probably spot several manmade objects, including the ISS space station. Beyond that, with the few hundred stars visible to the naked eye, you easily realize that we are no longer alone. There are planets, some very close, some very much like earth, probably inhabited with someone looking back at you, thinking the same things.
As I said, I like spam.
