(16,199 posts)As I mentioned, Connecticut's laws essentially require one. It's a 4 month process that requires a pistol safety class, applying to your local town Police Chief or First Selectman (who fingerprint and run background checks), then going to the State Police barracks for the final permit. Some towns have added requirements for 3 letters of reference and interview you to determine what is your motive for applying. I had to do both of those. My reason during the interview was the most common - I wanted to legally transport a handgun to a range. That said, the law is basically "shall issue". There is a little clause that allows the town official to deny if he feels you are unsuitable, which is undefined. If that happens (it's rare), then the applicant appeals to a board that hears the case.
