6. 2001 is probably the greatest film ever made.

I would not be surprised if it remains a canonical film for tens, hundreds or even thousands of years into the future. It's that important.

The film lends itself to repeated viewings and critical analysis. It's not a film I would watch leisurely. It is long, obscure and extremely dense.

Also, as stated, reading AC Clarke's novel will also help. It tends to highlight different parts of the story and focuses more on the first portion of the film when the proto-humans are fighting to survive.
