There's a report that attempts to CLAIM self defense have tripled... from 30 a year to around 90 a year. A big chunk of those were still convicted of murder, showing rather clearly that it's far from a "get out of jail free" card. As far as the actual murder rate, it continues to trend down as it has continuously for the last 20 years.
