(30,885 posts)1). "Some form of punishment" will have to be meted out to Zimmerman. He can't just walk away from this via a plea deal. The country is watching, and the country is pissed off. This story is hitting home on two extremely visceral levels...one, the matter of racial profiling. Two, any parent who has a kid and sees the story and thinks "that could have been my kid." Letting Zimmerman walk away with a slap on the wrist or less could have major negative repercussions.
2). It will be a matter of degrees. There are obviously people who want to see Zimmerman get the maximum penalty allowed by law. The challenge will be to provide a punishment severe enough to not spark an outrage. I'm not entirely confident that will happen. Following the strategy of Zimmerman's attorney, there is clearly an attempt to paint his client as the real "victim." That's not going to play well in Florida, or anywhere else in the country.
