In these types of social or religious cultures, women have no right to their own sexuality. It's frankly nothing new and not much different from how women were treated in Western cultures in the past. Young women were "sold" to the highest bidder. They were treated as glorified slaves, they were the property of the father, or the male in the family, if no father was present. These men would try to make a business deal that would be advantageous to their family by marrying off girls to the man who would benefit the family the most.

To ensure a profitable marriage, these women had to be pure. Virginity and fidelity were highly prized because men wanted to know that the children were their issue. In some western cultures women were not entitled to own property, the property was inherited by the male line of the family.

I'm extremely grateful to have been born in the 20th century.
