(62,325 posts)Michael Moore already did the research for you in his excellent documentary on our for-profit Health Insurance system, 'Sicko'.
He was inspired to make that documentary during the Bush years due to Right Wingers' claims that 'we have the best HC system in the world' and that the 'socialist, commie Europeans and Canadians have the worst'. They insisted people were LYING when they claimed that people in those 'commie' countries never had to worry about HC because of money.
So, he decided to do some research, and produced his documentary, which became the most popular HC response to Right Wingers among Dems at the time.
However, it made him a target of Corporate Shills in the MSM. Shills like Dr. Sanjay Gupta eg.
Always a fighter, MM would not let their lies stand. He was certain there was a campaign going on to discredit him and his documentary, and to prevent it from being seen. He wouldn't shut up for them, he took on Sanjay Gupta, apologist for the Health Ins. Corps, Wolf Blitzer with FACTS, pointing out their LIES.
And back then before he became a Whistle Blower himself, Wendell Potter was helping with that campaign. After his own epiphany, he was able to verify MM's suspicions publicly and apologized to him on the air for the role HE played in trying to discredit him. MM graciosly accepted his apology. Gupta also was forced to apologize AND acknowledge the truth of what MM had to say about our HC system confirming that either wittingly or unwittingly he had participated in the multi million dollar campaign to discredit MM.
If you have not seen Sicko, I would suggest you watch it, it might even be available online for free. There you will get the answer to your question about other countries where people do not have to worry about money when it comes to their HC.
The country I lived in was Ireland where a family close to me had a little girl born with neorofibromatosis, the most severe kind that indicated she would not live past the age of 17.
Not once did they have to worry about money as they and the Children's hospital, nurses, doctors and all those who became part of their lives, worked to try to extend that young life.
On one occasion, a tumor pressing on her spinal column was crippling her. Only ONE doctor was found who had enough experience to operate withour risking crippling her. He was in another country. The trip required a special plane with medical staff, nurses etc and equipment. The cost? Who knows, they did not have to worry about it. Also paid for was the parents stay while she underwent the surgery.
Back here we received updates, emails, videos of her progress. She survived the painful surgery and returned home. She lived five more years. Her sisters and parents believe she is an angel, she certainly was one while she was here, touching the hearts of literally thousands of people who came to know her.
Her short life WAS WORTH the cost in her country.
Had she lived here, her story and her parents' would be very different. Stress and worry about Ins Corps refusing certain treatments etc,, having to spend precious time on the phone, computer, writing letters, worried and grieving at the same time. Stealing precious, limited time from them and their child.
The loss of their young daughter was a tragedy they will never completely recover from, but no 'hoops to jump through' made the time they had with her, theirs, all of it.
I wish that for people here.
RIP Naoimh! Worth every minute, every dollar spent to keep her with the ones she loved for as long as possible, whoever spent it.
We miss you!
