Mom died in 2003 in her late 80's after decades of cooking and housecleaning despite suffering from painful rheumatoid arthritis. My dad, a real old time guy who never learned to cook or wash his own clothes, was totally dependent on her both physically and emotionally. They were never outwardly affectionate but we knew her whole purpose in living was to take care of him so that if he went first she would just give up, and if she went first he'd be unable to cope.

It wasn't as dramatic as this couple but within a month after she died, he was gone as well.
