(3,146 posts)In Italy circa 1920 people who saw the oncoming threat posed by Mussolini and his group tried desperately to warn the people about it.
They were told that the blackshirts were just a fringe movement and worrying about them was a waste of time.
Many Germans scoffed at an Austrian born German army veteran and his followers down in Munich.
There was no way these "National Socialists" would be anything more than a fringe movement they said.
More than a few Democrats had guffaws at the expense of the Tea Party.
What was the response? The Tea Party was just a "flash in the pan" and nothing to be concerned about. They were "too fringe" to ever do anything. The 2010 election proved that way of thinking to be very wrong.
Now we're on the cusp of an armed conflict between the militia and their supporters and the government and, as usual, warnings about what's to come are either unceremoniously brushed aside or even mocked.
Just like the apathy of the people of Italy and Germany allowed fringe groups to go mainstream and grab power I fear the apathy of Americans will allow these thugs to get bolder and bolder until a firefight is unavoidable.
