80. About 10 years ago...

...I was doing a post-hospital exam on one of our patients who had been transferred from our local hospital to a higher level facility because of a severe asthma attack. His mom told me they had 2 choices of where to transfer - Chicago Children's or a suburban hospital, Lutheran General. I had a hard time keeping my jaw from dropping open when she said, "I didn't want him at Children's because it's too colored there."

In my naivete, I initially thought perhaps she didn't like the paint scheme there. When it finally dawned on me she was talking about skin color, I was dumbstruck. Pro baby a good thing, because what I was thinking about her would have surely gotten my fired if I'd said it aloud. I'm sure this mom has no idea that she permanently changed how I my opinion of her, and that I recall that incident every time I see her.
