(3,596 posts)First of all there has never been and there never will be any advocacy as a matter of public policy for religious institutions to bless same-gender relationships or perform same-gender marriages.
The advocacy is all about legal recognition of those relationships as not more, not less but equal to the recognition, benefits and obligations of heterosexual marriage.
As a member of a Protestant denomination I advocate from within my church for acceptance and eventually a permissive approach to allow congregations to solemnize same gender marriages and/or bless the relationships.
No where else in the world to my knowledge has there been a mandate on religious institutions to perform same-gender marriages. In Sweden there was a formal separation of church and state in 2000 with only members paying a state church tax to support the church but with a retained burial tax on all citizens as most Swedes are buried in church cemeteries.
There the Church itself has imposed a requirement on the performing of same-gender marriages. There has been some opposition but in general it has been very smooth. But this was not a result of the political environment imposing this requirement on the church. The church did it itself.
The opposition to marriage equality and recognizing LGBT persons as deserving of the same rights and respect as everyone else is on the wane. The soon to be old, white Protestant minority is dying off. In 20 years people will ask themselves what the issue was with marriage equality and/or why there was a right-wing recoil when Michael Sam was drafted by the St. Louis Rams.
They are losing the culture wars. They have nothing else on which to run.
