(371 posts)I realize that there are religious nut jobs out there that use God's name to do all kinds of asinine things. And since those are the Christians most people see (since they are high profile) they are usually the ones that define the stereotype we all enjoy. I also recognize that women's rights are in the spotlight, mostly due to religion motivated legislation - which is a totally seperate issue and I have way too much to do today. But I feel that my point has been missed. I am essentially fighting a losing battle - as is highlighted in some of the responses I've received.
So enough of the argument to believe or not believe. Don't believe if you don't want to, it won't bother me. I am a registered Democrat, a Christian and a Texan - I am used to people not listening to me!
I am also stubborn so I will try one more time. The original point of my post was that I was offended at the misuse of scripture - and hence the direct insult to believers. Basically the OP illustrates that anyone who believes this is a moran. Misuse of scripture? Yes. When you publicly display scripture to try and show it as ridiculous that is misuse. The scripture shown was not even scripture at all, it was a summary of a few verses in someones own words. The few verses were part of a very big picture. But you are not seeing that because you are focused on showing it as ridiculous. "HAHA, the bible says you're supposed to kill your wife if she's not a virgin! Wait till those stupid Christians see that!!!11" That's what you are highlighting, that's what you are saying. Deuteronomy tells a STORY about the HISTORY of the Jewish people. Part of that history includes the rules that were commanded to THEM. When you highlight a specific section of that and present to someone who doesn't truly understand the context, and you make it seem like it is supposed to be a commandment by God to that reader, you are misusing that scripture. Sadly though, it was the apparent goal of whoever was holding that board.
I normally really like reading Pitt's posts. But I have my hot button items like everyone, and I will call bullshit when I see it. And that is whether or not you agree with my call.
