(2,805 posts)Might mean history of gun violations. I believe local law enforcement has to contact the Feds to find out to whom a gun is registered. There might be a local database but I am unsure.
Someone with no criminal record will probably always be sold a gun. A history of mental illness would be self-reported unless they were institutionalized. As far as I know almost no one is institutionalized thanks to Ronny Reagan. A 21 year old man can walk into a gun store and buy a gun. Unless he says he is going to shoot someone then the gun dealer has no reason to stop him. I'm sure plenty of regular customers at gun shops are a bit "off". Those are the types of people that are repeat customers. The regulated waiting periods are so that the onus is not entirely on the judgement of the shop owner.
I just had a prepper shop open up around me. They have a guy dressed up in hazmat gear costume holding a sign that says, "Prepper Supplies" with an arrow pointing to the shop. They are trying to draw me in but there must be enough people looking for prepper supplies that it makes it worth while to have someone point out the store.
