(16,487 posts)You are just renting it. The main reason, beyond the fact that ranges may not be available in many portions of the country, is that most are not equipped to store arms. There are almost no public ranges in Conn. If you want to target shoot or hunt like myself, you joint a nonprofit sportsman club. The club has ranges and 150 acres of land for deer hunting. But the clubhouse is just a single story building with meeting hall, kitchen and bathroom. The only other structure is the shotgun shack, where the clay pigeons are stored, and it's basically a shed with an outdoor accessible bathroom.
Another reason is that firearms need maintenance, such as cleaning. This is best done at home where you can dissemble the gun and if needed replace wear items like springs.
