(1,145 posts)existence is still pretty much what I call the "plantation code", wherein our actions are constantly being monitored and viewed suspiciously, wherein every white person seems to feel it is their responsibility to patrol us and keep a wary eye on what we're doing.
Every Black person has most likely experienced walking into a restaurant, store, etc. and had every white eye turn towards them and conversations slowly become muted. Every Black person has probably been stalked around a store at some point and I'm sure all the security cameras embedded in the ceiling are probably trained on me as soon as I walk in the door of a department store.
It's no surprise that young Black children are treated harshly by overseers (of every race) because it fits the plantation atmosphere they will experience for the rest of their lives. Despite having close relationships with many white people, I think there will always be a part of me that feels that Black people would be better off (happier and less stressed) if we lived separate.
