I am originally from Wisconsin (born in the 60s - I lived there when it was still blue) and now live in Texas. Frankly I don't see much difference with the obvious exception of the weather being opposite. I think you'd better do some research before you completely dismiss Texas. Start with the manufacturing town of San Antonio (ie - it's really a huge labor city - in the top 10 of this country in terms of population) ... and then read about the demographics.
Nobody is going to elect Ted Cruz to be president. That is the most insane thing I've read in awhile. And if you are in Chicago you have a lot to answer for with Rahm Emanuel as mayor. Frankly I can't think of a single way in which he is better than Cruz.
