In reply to the discussion: 5 Things Red State Liberals Want Blue State Liberals To Know [View all]A Little Weird
(1,754 posts)9. I very much agree
It really sucks to be surrounded by right-wingers all the time. I try to be a liberal voice in my little corner of the world, hoping that I may make some small difference against the tsunami of bullshit coming from the likes of Limbaugh and Fox News. One of the reasons I joined DU was so that I could interact with like-minded people. So it's a little demoralizing when I see threads or posts talking about "flyover country" or bashing my state or region, etc.
I liked this part of the article:
The bottom line is when people say things like why doesnt state X just secede they are speaking about all of us in that state including the liberals. When liberals choose to dismiss and write off the efforts of liberals running for office in red states because its too hard or its hopeless we are effectively saying people in those states dont deserve the same freedoms and opportunities that we believe in. When we as liberals traffic in classist stereotypes about whole areas of the country being stupid, poor, and uneducated we are no better than people who are trying to restrict who can vote and saying its for the same reasons.
We are supposed to be the big tent group. That tent reaches over red states too. Sometimes we dont feel the love.
But I would like to say that I often do feel the love and I really appreciate the community here. So many DUers post great news stories that I would never hear about anywhere else and I have been exposed to viewpoints that I wouldn't otherwise come across. So thanks!
