The article says that they had kicked her out of their home the previous week.

This sounds like extremely abusive parents who can't stand to see their victim escape their control. Maybe they were angry that the young man gave her a place to stay after they had kicked her out. Probably they intended for her to end up so desperste on the streets that she would crawl back and beg and be totally submissive.
