In reply to the discussion: ISIS training child soldiers to kill infidels [View all]hifiguy
(33,688 posts)The Romans were content with tribute and service rendered to Rome and even allowed Roman conquered/affiliated territories to keep their own local gods, for the most part. Genghis Khan followed a similar pattern. Neither sought to obliterate the populations they conquered as it simply wasn't good business.
Isis and those like them (Xtian dominionists are, naturally, the closest thing we have in the Western world) do not want to conquer, as did the Caesars and G. Khan. They are on a "holy" war to exterminate the "infidels" and "unbelievers." There is no reasoning with an eighth-century mind.
It is sad to say, but the time will come when some group of this nature eventually does lay its hands and backward minds on the Bomb or something similar. And rational civilization will have no option but to act preemptively with extreme prejudice. I am a peaceable person by nature but there is no reasoning with absolutists who shun and scorn reason in the name of fidelity to their invisible sky daddy. And reason is the only tool humanity has to survive and progress.
Sam Harris makes these points at length and far more elegantly than do I.
