I've seen some very wide all season tires that do the job very well. I had 11.5"s on my GTI and it handled snow with aplomb. Also, you'll find a number of trucks with very wide rear tires that have no issue with the snow. If the tread isn't meant for poor weather, you're going to have issues in the snow regardless of tire width.
