Basically it is a rule that says if you are committing a crime (felony) and in the process of that crime someone is killed, you can be charged with murder of that person.

Just an example: you walk into a store and pull out a gun and try to rob the place. The clerk pulls out a shotgun, pulls the trigger, totally misses you as you run out the door, but hits and kills the little old lady coming in the door. You can be charged with murder of the little old lady under the felony murder rule.
