A Ukrainian nation has existed sporadically over the last three centuries, but there is no period of stability of any significant length that one can point to and say "this is (or was) Ukraine". The east/west divisions are very real, not some figment of Russian imperialist ambitions. The state that emerged from the collapse of the USSR was unable to resolve those divisions, and unable to form a functional government of the entire region, a fact that has lead to the current crisis.
