By the process of metabolism they convert oxygen into carbon dioxide and water vapor. With every exhale of these waste products from their bodies, they in turn fuel the metabolism of the nearby plant life, which in turn converts CO2 and water into sugars, thereby releasing the oxygen we and other animal life breathe in, and of course, producing nutrient-rich fodder from browsing creatures!

...well, you did say any redeeming qualities, didn't you?
