on state and local levels, the most regressive pols who promise to cut govt spending, roll back education gains, deny medicare expansion, etc. win with a majority of the White, non-college educated vote. That one bloc gives Republicans their power largely because they know that even though they are poor and struggling, they still benefit in society by being a White male.
