It reinvigorated the career of Farrah Fawcett, who had been viewed as a difficult lightweight for "demanding too much money" for her Charlie's Angels role. It was a serious, heavy part and it highlighted the issue of domestic violence in a way that hadn't been seen before. It also introduced to the wider world a new defense strategy to the court system. It was based on a true story.

Based on the true story of Francine Hughes, who was accused of murdering her husband on March 9, 1977 in Dansville, Michigan. She was found not guilty by reason of temporary insanity, and her case created a legal precedent for how domestic violence cases were to be handled in the future.
