4. That case was one of the first to start changing the concept of self-defense.

The defense before then was almost universally "duty to withdraw." If there was a way you could get away, you had to at least try before you could claim self-defense as a defense to a criminal charge. This case and others like it led to a new term: "battered woman syndrome."
