Just want to be clear that as a veteran I think military force is a last resort. In this case, I also believe there are no other alternatives but violence as ISIS is crazy. I approve of the President's handling of it thus far. We cannot/should not go it alone for all the reasons you state but I feel strongly, and hope I turn out to be wrong, that if ISIS is allowed to survive in any significant way (the conflict is unresolved by the regional powers and they ask us to help), then we will need to aid those threatened. I'm not even talking about the oil, either. I'm talking about for the good of the people. I was re-called for Oil War I/Desert Storm and vowed never to fight for oil again and wouldn't ask any other SM to do it.
To sum it up, it may come down to pay me now or pay me later.
