maybe a hundred here...

But, no one has yet mentioned that civilians are not supposed to salute. It's reserved for the military in uniform. It's particularly bad form for civilian government officials to salute because of our separation of militay and civilian authority.

Reagan was the first President who saluted, and, because he was Reagan, no one but a few misfits complained. He mumbled something about being Commander in Chief as his excuse, and the whole thing was wrapped up as part of the Reagan patriotic circus. Now, it seems to be accepted. Required, even.

Did Eisenhower or Carter, who were formerly military officers, salute? Does the Secretary of Defense salute?
