(5,169 posts)There used to be a term. "genteel poverty.' I believe it meant people who came from "good," formerly wealthy families, who now had very little money to live on. There is definitely a new kind of "genteel poverty" today. These days it might be better termed "well educated." or "used to better days" poverty. These are the many people who are well educated, well spoken, and present themselves well... but are pretty much "broke" financially, regardless of their desire to work. Quality clothes wear well, and amazing bargains in terms of such clothes are readily available at Goodwill, for those not too snobbish to search them out. For those who prefer those needing and using "assistance," most publicly recognized in terms of "food stamps," to be the ragged, maybe dirty people they expect to see: sorry, times have changed. This doesn't mean help isn't sadly needed for more and more deserving citizens.
