but I think there's more there than just 'what went before', but also 'what we keep doing'.

And I think 'opening up more oil venues' is exactly the wrong thing to do. I'm actually not inherently opposed to high gasoline prices. Keeping the price low is what suppresses our search for cleaner alternatives. Ditto natural gas fracking, coal, nuclear. As long as we subsidize and allow ever more 'venues to be opened', we're not going to get past the use of the the dirty fuels that are destroying the ability of humans to live on the planet. So the President's willingness to allow more drilling offshore and more fracking coast to coast is a bad thing, not something to be celebrated.
