(5,610 posts)voted for his first time yesterday..we spoke about the current direction of America.
He said he and his friends expect a "civil war" in their lifetimes. They realize that we are no longer a Democracy.
I stressed the importance of voting ( i think the wealthy have that fixed also now) and how changing America with non-violent means is very important.
We must regain a Democracy (FDR style, IMO). As long as money controls politics/politicians, it aint gonna happen.
He asked me about how the non-violent protests I attended in my youth worked. He reminded me of Kent state and said that while the police now will hurt you for protesting, he thought it was more dangerous in my day...he said they usually don't kill you now. I explained that was the national guard called out by Nixon and how while most of the impeachable offenses he committed then, are now legal, after Watergate, the people wouldn't tolerate any more fascism (then). Currently fascism is the norm...sickening.
While I hope that his generation can and does change the political landscape, they really do not know our actual history. I hope he reads my copy of Zinns, History of the American People and learns about our true struggle.
The American people do want a different country. We do want FDR's Second Bill of Rights. It is class struggle with the 90% losing miserably.
I just hope this can be done without a civil war. It must be done. Election after election I see how little we the people matter.
If the Democratic party will back Bernie Sanders in 2016, and fight money with money...until we get money out of politics,
Americans will get real change that we can believe in. A transformative change for the better. I don't expect it to happen. Wheres the money in that? America is learning to embrace fascism, maybe Thomas Jefferson had it right about replenishing our Democracy with the blood of patriots. I hope we can find a better way even though those (increasingly militaristic) wealthy power brokers who control our(?) police and military have shown their propensity for violence, again and again.
Fucking GREED should not be emulated but it is sociopathic behavior that is currently admired in America.
