for when it goes against basic principles. For instance, if taxes are to be raised some compromise is possible on the rates, but no compromise should occur if the major burden falls on the poor and middle classes. If taxes are to be cut, no compromise should be made to allow the lion's share to go to the wealthy.

Compromise should result from both sides giving as much as they are getting. We rarely see that any more.

Compromise is necessary in the real world and it can be a good thing. Unfortunately, not much compromise is possible with what the republican party has become. They are very much absolutists in their demands. For them, it is give me everything I want or I'll shut down the government.
