Manchin has been involved in WV politics for some time, has been elected statewide on a number of occasions, and has more than proved his moderate credentials. Few West Virginians doubt his sincerity on key issues that matter to them like coal or firearms. Nevertheless, he would still have a tough election if he was running in 2014.

Nunn and Grimes did not have Manchin's history, and other more moderate Democrats like Pryor, Landrieu, and Begich, no less Udall and Hagan, became too closely associated with Obama and more liberal policies, many of which were not popular in their states.

I don't see how more liberal Democrats would have fared better in the states where we lost, and in any event, the Democrats choose these more conservative candidates in free and fair Democratic primaries.
