If I could turn back the clock and change anything that would make your pain stop, I would. Your son's loss should never have happened." There, he's not admitting anything that he hasn't already admitted, and he sounds sincere.
His faux-pology translates to me (from sociopath-speak to normal-person speak) as "I'm sorry I got caught. And because I'm sorry that I'm now in jail, I'm going to apologize because yesterday you said you wouldn't meet with me unless I apologized, so now I'm apologizing so I look better to the judge. It wasn't really my fault you know, your son did look older than he was, even if I said differently before, I'm saying it this way now so I don't look like such a monster for killing a child. And besides, you can't really blame me for thinking a black guy was packing, c'mon! Aren't they all? So see, I'm not really responsible, and I'm just apologizing because my lawyer said it would make me look like I had a heart."
