If he would have went in there and said, "Mr. and Mrs. Martin, I'm sorry I killed your son," he would have instantly convicted himself.
You do not, under any circumstance, go into court and say you killed the person you're charged with killing.
He can apologize for murdering Mrs. Martin's son after he's convicted. (Which, assuming they get an impartial jury, is probably going to happen.)
