(8,933 posts)I would qualify for disability according to my doctor because I have a mental illness. I have never tried to get it because I always felt I could work, but the fact that I can barely get myself out of the house says plenty. Could I work? I don't know.
The thing is, that there are a lot of people who might 'look' like they are just fine. But you have no way of knowing what is going on. My husband has back pain and yet cuts wood and lifts heavy things because he has to.
How about my niece.... She is legally blind and learning disabled. She has had hip surgery and will have another soon. She is 7 years old. My sister has only tried to get her medicaid as the health bills are killing them. But they apparently make too much to qualify. I know that is off topic, but I couldn't help myself.
I had a friend who worked picking cherries. He had so many problems and was denied disability three times. He had to stand on his feet and work all day when he was in pain. Yet he was denied. And for the record, to look at him you probably would have said the same thing.... he did finally get his disability btw.... to you he would not look disabled, but he is.
