(3,580 posts)I have heard many people say similar things. First of all, I don't think anyone would ever say there is no one on SS disability (about 12 million) who should not be getting it. There are always a few who manage to put one over on us. That being said, it is not easy to get on SS, or to stay on it. Frivolous claims get weeded out pretty fast. The number of fraudulent claims are minimal. A couple of observations though. Many times people do not understand their own problems well. Lots of would apply citing "bad back" or "headaches." Then you see the medical records and you see that yes, their back hurts but the real problem is schizophrenia or hallucinations. I had one young woman apply because she had calluses on her fingers. It turned out that she heard Jesus talking to her on her car radio.. Also, people will somtimes not tell you their real diagnosis for fear of embarassment. It is, in this case as well as in life in general, not to judge or generalize about people until you are sure you have enough information.
