(3,747 posts)As I don't think there's clear evidence for a threat one way or another, but if we are to accept that he or his family is being threatened, at what point does the president (or anyone in a position of power) have a responsibility to the country he was elected to serve? Hurting millions to protect a few is unnacceptable to me. Being president comes with risks, and no matter how hard the decision may be, you need to be able to fight for the good of the populace. People have laid down their lives for civil rights, for union rights, for many things. I would argue that holding the office of the presidency means that you need to be willing to do the same, because of the power that comes with the office. Though a vote one way may protect your family, it cannot come at the expense of thousands or millions of other families.
Of course, this entire discussion is pointless if the president is not actually being threatened, so make of that what you will.
