30,000 sign up on Florida's free "Do Not Call" list in just 24 hours [View all]

Floridians want their peace and quiet -- for free.

Some 30,000 signed up for Florida's new free "Do Not Call" list in just 24 hours after state workers sent out a press release Monday that a new law made the registry free, said Amy Topol, assistant director of the state's Division of Consumer Services.

That was a 38 percent jump in just one day: The list had only 80,000 before the notice of the free service went out, Topol said.

By Wednesday morning, another 20,000 had signed up, she said.
