Bill Clinton was a well-known Southern Democrat and former chair of the DLC at the time he ran. That organization had already had several ideological skirmishes with the left, Jesse Jackson being the most noteworthy. If you thought Bill Clinton was a 'progressive' saviour you were sleepwalking through the the '92 election.
